How Often Should a Grease Trap Be Cleaned?

Published: October 28, 2026 / Last Updated: October 28, 2026

The right cleaning frequency helps keep a commercial grease trap working properly and reduces the chance that accumulated fats, oils, grease, and solids will interfere with drainage. For restaurants, hotels, institutional kitchens, and other facilities, the schedule depends on the type of interceptor, kitchen activity, local requirements, and how quickly grease accumulates.

Magnolia provides grease trap cleaning, pumping, preventive maintenance, repairs, replacement, hydrojetting, and commercial liquid-waste services throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.

How Often Should a Grease Trap Be Cleaned?

Cleaning frequency varies by system, but commercial operators should follow the most stringent requirement that applies to their equipment and location.

In Washington, DC, gravity grease interceptors generally must be cleaned and inspected every 90 days, or sooner when grease and solids exceed the applicable accumulation limit. Hydromechanical or flow-based interceptors generally require cleaning and inspection every 30 days or sooner based on accumulation.

Within WSSC Water’s service area, volume-based grease interceptors generally require maintenance at least quarterly, according to manufacturer recommendations, a code official’s direction, or the 25% rule—whichever is more stringent.

Because usage varies, a high-volume restaurant may need service more often than a facility producing less grease. Magnolia can help establish a practical maintenance schedule based on your interceptor and operating conditions.

What Happens If a Grease Trap Isn’t Cleaned?

When grease and solids accumulate, they reduce the interceptor’s available capacity. That buildup can contribute to unpleasant odors, slower drainage, backups, overflows, and interruptions to normal kitchen operations.

Regular pumping and cleaning remove accumulated waste before it creates larger plumbing problems. Depending on the condition of the system, Magnolia can also provide surface cleaning, high-pressure water jetting, drain cleaning, and repairs.
