Should I Replace My Air Conditioner Before Summer?

Summer is just around the corner, and most of us are busy preparing our homes for the coming heat. For most people, some professional maintenance and repairs will be enough to get their air conditioning system ready for summer. For some of us, though, that simply won’t be enough. Sooner or later, there will come a time when your air conditioner simply can’t last through another hot season. When that happens, you should replace it as soon as possible. Let’s take a look at whether you should replace your air conditioner before summer.

Drop in Output

The older an air conditioner gets, the more wear and tear it accumulates. Eventually, the wear on the system will progress to the point where the efficiency of the air conditioner will drop. As the air conditioner operates for longer and longer to affect the same temperature changes it normally does, the cost of operation will go up. If your monthly air conditioning bills are rising for no apparent reason, you may need to install a new air conditioner.

Rising Repair Issues

The same wear and tear that causes the above problem will also eventually result in groups of parts in the system failing. Normally, an air conditioner shouldn’t need repairs more than once every few years. Older air conditioners will begin to need repairs more and more often in order to remain operating, however. If you need to repair your air conditioning system every few months, you definitely need to install a new system.

Age

Air conditioners are manufactured to last around 20 years, after which point they will become increasingly difficult to keep operating. Once your air conditioner gets older than that, it would very likely save you more money to install a new system than to keep the current one up and running.
