Boiler Problems That You Should Watch for

Boilers have a well-earned reputation for being tough systems. They tend to last years longer than other heating systems, and have fewer problems during their lifespans. This is often attributed to their smaller number of moving parts. The fewer moving parts there are, the fewer ways there are for something to go wrong. However, boilers are not immune to issues. There are still problems that can crop up with the system. If you’re using a boiler to keep warm this winter, watch out for the following signs that something is wrong.
 

Kettling

We’ve covered this in greater depth on another post, but it still merits a mention here. If your boiler is making a deep rumbling sound during operation, that means that it’s kettling. Kettling is the result of the heat exchanger becoming clogged, usually from lime scale buildup. This causes water to become trapped and evaporate inside the heat exchanger, becoming steam and putting immense pressure on the pipe. If the pressure is not relieved, the heat exchanger could rupture and cause water damage to the entire surrounding area. You should turn off your boiler and call for repairs as soon as you notice this problem.
 

Uneven Heating

Uneven heating throughout the house can be explained in a couple of different ways. It’s possible that there’s a blockage of some kind in the pipe network, which is preventing hot water from reaching that part of the house that isn’t getting enough heat. It’s also possible that there’s a problem with the circulation pump, which is responsible for circulating water throughout the system. Finally, you could have a large leak in the network, though that is often accompanied by obvious water damage. Regardless, call for repairs if part of your house doesn’t seem to be getting the heat it should.
