Should I Replace My Furnace This Winter?

Furnaces can last a pretty long time if properly taken care of, but they can’t last forever. After a couple of decades, you’ll reach a point where it’s just too expensive to keep the system up and running. At that point, it’s in your best interest to replace the system with a new one. Let’s take a look at some of the signs that you need to replace your furnace this winter.

Rising Heating Bills

Of course, your heating bills are going to go up during the winter as you use your furnace more often. That’s not what we’re talking about, though. As a system accumulates wear and tear over years of normal use, the efficiency of the system will start to drop. This will force the system to stay on for longer and longer periods of time to compensate for the loss of efficiency, which will cause your heating bills to go up. If your heating bills are rising for no apparent reason, you might want to consider replacing your furnace.

Increased Repairs

The same wear and tear that leads to decreases in efficiency often leads to various parts of the system failing under the stress. As each part wears down a little bit differently, there is a possibility for multiple different components to fail in rapid succession. A typical furnace shouldn’t need repairs more than once or twice a year, if that. If you need to have your furnace repaired every few months, you definitely need to replace it. It is far cheaper to get a new system at that point than to spend a ton of money to keep the old one up and running.
