The Benefits of Installing a Heat Pump This Fall

As we move through the fall season, more people are going to start looking for new heating options before winter sets in. If you’re one of those people, you should consider installing a heat pump. Heat pumps offer a number of unique advantages over traditional heating systems. Let’s take a look at what a heat pump is, and how it can benefit you.

What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is actually constructed more like an air conditioner than a heater. There are two units that make up the system, one outside and one inside. These two units are connected by a conduit of power and refrigerant lines. When in heating mode, the outside unit evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy from the surrounding air. It then sends that thermal energy inside to be released and heat the home.

Why You Should Choose a Heat Pump

There are a number of big advantages offered by heat pumps. Since a heat pump doesn’t burn any sort of fuel to generate heat, it is much cheaper to operate than more traditional home heating systems. Over time, you will save much more money on heating by using a heat pump than you ever would with centralized combustion heaters. Another big advantage of using a heat pump is its ability to act as both a heater and an air conditioner. This is done by reversing the flow of refrigerant through the system, which is accomplished through a part called the “reversing valve.” So, you can continue using your heat pump year round to keep your home cool. This is something that no other system can match, and saves you a great deal of money that would otherwise go to a separate system.
